Quantum Hall Effect

Theory of the integer quantum Hall effect (1981-83).

Principal collaborator: Rudy Kazarinov

Our percolation-theory approach to the QHE was the first microscopic theory of this new effect. It explained the QHE in terms of the existence of a peculiar long-range order in the 2D electronic system in which electrons delocalized along electrostatic equipotential lines remain self-coherent over macroscopic distances. Our study was influential in clarifying the nature of the QHE and the fundamental role of disorder. A switching device based on the controlled percolation of electron orbits has been proposed, US Pat. 4,488,164.
