After a
hundred years of extraordinary development, radio is entering a new era. The
converging computer and communication technologies add intelligence to old
applications and generate new ones. The enormous impact of radio on the society
continues to increase. It is widely accepted that the RF spectrum will be the
main engine of economic growth and of improvement of the living standard in the
next few decades. The basic problem is the relative scarcity of radio
frequencies. Most of suitable frequencies have already been used and new demand
exceeds what can be accommodated. However, some allocated spectrum is not
intensively used. There is a need to
more efficiently use the existing spectrum, and create more common pool of
spectrum. On the other hand, many new radio technologies have emerged, that
enables the transmissions at much higher speed. Our group has been working on
designing new network and system infrastructure that can take advantage of the
new radio technologies and make many new wireless and mobile computing
applications a reality.
